Chapter 8
Jemma felt a warm glow through her body as she sat in front of Luke Carsen. Sheâd enjoyed every moment with him this past week. He was so easy to get along with. He always said the sweetest things to her. Sheâd never had that with her ex, funnily enough. She couldnât even recount any sweet moments with Thomas.
But right now, she had other things on her mind. Like honoring her grandfatherâs last wish. And how she felt about Luke.
They sat at the Sweet Rivers Café with their order of hot chocolates with cinnamon-flavored candy canes, marshmallows, and whipped cream.
âHowâs your grandpa doing today?â Luke asked, a concerned expression on his face.
Luke had been so sweet to ask her every time he saw her how her grandfather was doing. And it wasnât just a casual howâs-he-doing. It was more of a howâs-he-really-doing,-I-want-to-know-I-really-care type of thing.
âI just saw him again this morning.â Tears pricked her eyes. âI see him every day, but...â
âAre you okay?â
She nodded slowly. Though she was feeling anything but okay. It was hard to explain to anyone, especially to Luke about her grandfatherâs last wish.
âItâs just that...well, we spoke about the time he has left, and I just want to spend each second with him, every single day.â
âI understand.â
âItâs not just that. He...when Iâm there he tells me how sorry he is that...â
Just then her cell phone rang. It was probably for the best. Saved by the ring.
She was about to spill it all out to Luke about how her grandfather hoped sheâd be married by Christmas before he passed on. But thatâs an impossible dream, an impossible wish. She knew it and it broke her heart.
Even if she found someone, she didnât trust herself around them. After her exâs mental abuse, she didnât know if she could trust her judgement anymore.
That was it. Plain and simple. Sheâd have to find another way, somehow, to make her grandfather happy in his last days. But she just couldnât do that.
When she glanced at the screen of her phone, she saw that it was a call from an unknown number.
âSorry, I should probably take this.â She bit down on her lower lip when she spoke to him.
âNo problem.â
âHello?â she asked cautiously. There was no one on the other end of the phone line. She then looked up and then grinned and shook her head. She listened for a moment as Luke watched her cautiously with a slight concern on his face.
She decided not to speak again, knowing there were a lot of phone scams out there where the caller might want to record your voice for various nefarious reasons including using it as a voice-authentication duplication to get into secured accounts. It was all too crazy, but it was better to be cautious than careless. If it were a true business, theyâd have said something by now. Theyâd have asked for her, even if they didnât hear a sound.
She hung up.
Of course, it could just be dead air. Maybe it was just a misdial.
